This video shows a leading Indian vascular surgeon discussing about deep venous thrombosis (DVT) – leg blood clot.

Following is the video narration.

“Deep venous thrombosis is where there are major clots in the major veins of the legs which are formed and most of the people treat the venous thrombosis with medical management where we just give the patient certain drugs. But if you look at the latest recommendations it has been shown that we should try to treat deep venous thrombosis, if the patient comes within 14 days to us, with active treatment in for percutaneous. So we go through the skin and we take these clots out and put this patient on blood thinners.

Why we do this is that it has been shown that if we do the active treatment, the chances of the destruction of the venous walls is less. So all these patients over a follow up period, the chances of post thrombotic syndrome, what we call is that the chances of having skin changes or the chances of having a venous ulcer will be much less as compared to if we just put the patients on the medical management and we have also seen that these patients, they are much quicker to return to work because the swelling disappears actually within 24-48 hours as compared to medical treatment where it takes 4-6 weeks for the swelling to go down.

Normally the procedure takes around half an hour to one hour and patient has to stay in the hospital for around 2-3 days and then we put these patients on blood thinners and they can go home.”

Apart from deep venous thrombosis, the surgeon specializes in vascular surgeries like varicose veins surgery,  abdominal and thoracic aneurysms, diabetic foot surgery and femoral embolectomy.

The cost of medical treatment in India is much affordable than the western countries and the hospitals are also well equipped with the latest technology. These are some major draws for patients considering India for their treatment.
